I Just Received A Letter From The Future...And It Was From ME!

THE LETTER THAT ARRIVED IN DOCTOR MARVEL’S HANDS,

POSTMARKED FROM A YEAR THAT HASN’T HAPPENED YET

My Dearest and Most Dubiously Qualified Self,

If this reaches you—and the probability matrix suggests a 62% chance of non‑combustion upon delivery—then the experiment worked. Or rather, it will have worked, which is a different tense entirely and one you must learn to respect if you intend to keep your eyebrows.

I write to you from a year I dare not name, for reasons involving paradoxes, municipal ordinances, and one extremely judgmental librarian. Suffice it to say: the calendar has grown stranger, and so have we.

You are about to make a discovery.

Not the small kind—like realizing you left the etheric condenser on again—but the kind that rearranges the furniture of reality. You will be tempted to celebrate. You will be tempted to brag. You will be tempted to patent it under the name Marvelian Chrono‑Elasticity Device, which, I assure you, is still a terrible name in the future.

Do not trust the man with the velvet suitcase.

He is not what he claims.

He is not even when he claims.

You will meet him in three nights’ time, behind the tent, after your performance of the Silver Circles. He will offer you a coil of shimmering wire that seems to hum in sympathy with your own heartbeat. You will feel the urge to take it. You must resist. That wire is a temporal siphon, and accepting it will set in motion a sequence of events that ends with you explaining causality to a panel of very stern women who do not believe in magic and do not appreciate your jokes.

Instead, you must follow the instructions I have enclosed.

Yes, I know you dislike instructions.

Yes, I know you believe improvisation is the highest form of science.

But trust me: the universe has grown tired of your improvisation.

You will soon notice a ringing in your left ear.

This is normal.

You will soon notice a ringing in your right ear.

This is less normal.

When both ears ring in harmony, step away from any rope, wire, chain, or circular object. The resonance can trigger a temporal fold, and we both remember what happened the last time you fell through one. The raccoon remembers too.

There is one more matter.

You must be kind to the boy who approaches you after the show next Thursday. He will ask you how the rings link. He will ask you again when you refuse to tell him. He will ask you a third time with a sincerity that will disarm you. Tell him the truth—not the trick, but the philosophy:

That the world is full of impossible connections,

and sometimes the only magic is believing they can be made.

He will need that lesson.

More than you know.

More than I can safely explain.

I cannot stay in this time much longer. The air here tastes like yesterday, and my bones are beginning to remember things they have not yet experienced. But before I go, let me leave you with this:

The future is not fixed.

The knots can be untied.

The rope remembers—but it also forgives.

Do not squander that mercy.

With temporal affection,

and mild disappointment,

Doctor Marvel
