Disregard The Previous Letter, Another Epistle From The Future`
THE SECOND LETTER,
WHICH ARRIVED BEFORE THE FIRST, (But was lost in the mail)
AND YET ANSWERS THINGS YOU HAVEN’T ASKED
My Esteemed and Chronically Overconfident Marvel,
If you are reading this, then the delivery mechanism has misfired again. This letter was meant to arrive after the other one, but the postal stream has grown petulant and refuses to obey linearity. Consider this your warning: the universe is already annoyed with you.
You will not understand this letter yet.
You will think it is a prank.
You will suspect the ventriloquist.
You will blame the hypnotist.
You will briefly accuse the bearded lady, which you must apologize for immediately.
But I assure you: this is from me.
And therefore from you.
And therefore from a version of us who has seen too much and slept too little.
Let me begin with the most important part:
Do not open the blue envelope.
You will find it tucked inside your coat pocket on Wednesday morning. You will not remember placing it there. You will assume it is a bill, or a love note, or a threat from the carnival manager. It is none of these. It is a temporal seed, and opening it prematurely will cause it to sprout. You are not ready for what grows.
You will soon encounter a phenomenon you will be tempted to call Marvelian Temporal Echoes. Resist the urge to name it after yourself. The echoes are not yours. They belong to the rope.
Yes, the rope.
The one you use in the Vanishing Knot routine.
The one you bought from the old sailor who never blinked.
That rope is older than you think.
Older than the sailor.
Older than the ship he claimed to serve on.
It remembers hands that have not yet been born.
When it begins to hum, do not panic.
When it begins to tighten on its own, do not cut it.
When it begins to whisper, absolutely do not answer.
You will be tempted to test it.
You will be tempted to measure the hum with your Chrono‑Oscillator.
You will be tempted to feed it electricity, because you always feed strange things electricity.
Do none of these.
Instead, place the rope in the wooden box beneath your cot.
The box with the false bottom.
The one you carved during your “minimalist phase.”
The rope will be safe there until the moment arrives.
Now, a matter of personal importance:
You must stop telling people you are “on the verge of cracking time wide open.”
You are not.
Time is not an egg.
Time is a river with teeth.
Treat it accordingly.
There is one final instruction, and you will not like it:
When the man with the velvet suitcase arrives—yes, that man—you must greet him politely. You must offer him tea. You must listen to his pitch. You must decline his offer. And then, when he leaves, you must follow him.
Not to accept the wire.
Not to bargain.
Not to meddle.
Follow him because he drops something.
A small brass token.
A coin that is not a coin.
Pick it up.
Keep it hidden.
You will need it when the first letter arrives.
I cannot say more.
The future is watching.
And it has grown suspicious of us.
With weary affection,
and premature regret,
Doctor Marvel
